What is carbon offsetting?
Carbon offsetting is the act of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by trading or purchasing credits from others through emissions reductions projects. The term usually refers to voluntary offsets arranged through a third party.
There are a wide variety of offset methods currently being used. Planting trees was the first widely used strategy for carbon offsetting. Other offsets currently in use include methane capture, renewable energy and energy conservation.
The reduction of carbon emissions is an important function. Offsets should not be viewed as the only solution to the greenhouse gas problem. The reduction of carbon emissions has a greater effect than only using offsets. The best plan is to reduce what emissions we can while offsetting the remaining emissions.
